Welcome to the Multiple Myeloma Chair

This chair promotes teaching, training and documentation activities in the field of monoclonal gammopathies, in general, and multiple myeloma, in particular.
The natural history of multiple myeloma has been revolutionized in recent decades thanks to knowledge in biology and immunology about the mechanisms of progression and resistance, as well as targeted therapeutic strategies, with a significant effect on the prognosis of patients. . Several families of drugs have been incorporated that change the treatment paradigm, including proteasome inhibitors (bortezomib and carfilzomib), immunomodulators (thalidomide, lenalidomide and pomalidomide) and anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies. Especially after the great advances in immunotherapy, new molecules are emerging on the horizon, such as bispecific antibodies and CAR T lymphocytes, among others.
The complexity of patient diagnosis and treatment has increased, which is why multidisciplinary groups have been created. Consequently, it is increasingly necessary for specialists to have more specific knowledge in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, clinical and translational research, and new therapies with their complications.
The essential objectives of the chair are the promotion of a whole set of teaching, training, information and documentation activities in the field of monoclonal gammopathies.

Carlos Fernández de Larrea, Doctor in hematology at Hospital Clínic, visiting researcher at the Pavia Amyloidosis Center, the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, as well as at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York for 18 months , working on CAR-T cells for myeloma. He is currently a consultant at the Department of Hematology at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, group leader at IDIBAPS and associate professor at the University of Barcelona.
